A list of Birdwatching sites around the St Helens area

Billinge Hill -- Liverpool RSPB's group's write up from their walk around Billinge Hill.
Bold Moss -- This reclaimed colliery spoil heap at SJ545940 which stands on mosses and wetlands.
Carr Mill Dam -- Carr Mill Dam is situated approximately 2 miles to the north of St Helens at SJ 525 985.
Catchdale Moss -- Catchdale Moss is the area of farm land to the north west of St. Helens, bordered by Eccleston Mere, Prescot Reservoirs, Knowsley Safari Park and the A580 (East Lancs road).

Eccleston Mere -- The next best site in St Helens for birds. (permit and key holders only).

Newton Lake -- Newton Lake at SJ595958.
Old Coach Road -- The Old Coach Road starts out of the borough at its northern end near Bickerstaffe and travels 3.5 miles to end at the A580 East Lancashire Road (SD448024 to SJ971458).
Prescot Reservoirs -- Reckoned to be the best site in St Helens for birdwatching, especially waders. Prescot Reservoirs is owned by United Utilities and access is limited to permit holders only. At the time of writing, there is a waiting list for permits.
Rainford Mosslands -- The Rainford Mosslands is an area of sparsely populated, mainly flat, farmland just to the north of St. Helens, and to the west of the village of Rainford.
Sankey Valley -- The St Helens stretch of Sankey Valley Park starts at the southeast corner of Carr Mill Dam and heads southeast for approximately 5 miles, passing through Blackbrook, Parr, Haydock, Earlestown and Newton-le-Willows.

Sherdley Park -- Sherdley Park is a public park to the south of St Helens, and lies in a triangle between Marshall’s Cross Road, Elton Head Road and the St Helens Linkway.
Siding Lane -- Siding Lane is west of the A570 Rainford By-pass at SD463020 and is sign-posted. (St Helens WRG link).
